The citizens of Golfito, public institutions, representatives of indigenous territories, NGOs, and Geolupa worked together in their respective roles and areas of expertise to develop the Solid Waste Management Plan, which will be one of the first to include Marine and Coastal Waste in the country.

A diagnosis was carried out in collaboration with the local environmental committee, community associations, waste managers, and the population to determine how solid waste was being managed, followed by a proposal to improve and implement strategies for integrated solid waste management and a reduction in plastics use.

The study allowed us to know the users’ perceptions and to identify the main threats to the municipal drinking water aqueduct of this community, thereby working together with the representatives to develop a plan to manage these threats and reduce the risk, guaranteeing the quality and quantity of drinking water for the citizens of Belén.

In cooperation with a group of professionals from different disciplines such as Economics, Geography, and Environmental Engineering, a collaborative work was carried out with the municipality’s Environmental Department, providing them with the inputs and the baseline for an adequate integrated management of urban solid waste.

The project was developed in three phases, which included the civilian population, community organizations, ASADAS, and the local government, making it an interdisciplinary, multisectoral, and interinstitutional project.
